It's not a new discussion if you participate in an old discussion.
Maybe this helps to understand it a little bit better: If a challenge runs, you can start a new discussion in the sub forum of the challenge you're participate in.
At any time in a challenge, you can start a new discussion. For example: In the Avoid Entertaining Media challenge you write about your alternative, rewards and penalties in the first days. After a week you come back, edit your first post and write about your experience in the first week, then after 2 weeks, etc.
If the challenge is over you can still add information to your discussion and can discuss stuff with other people, but it will not count if a complete new challenge starts.
The bot needs an indicator to see if the participant did something in the challenge. So it looks for new discussions since the challenge started.
But the whole thing is about to be self reflective, find solutions to problems, help others and be inspiring, if they read your experience. So every new discussion should contain your experience and if you had problems, how you solved them.
